Help Needed - ID Bronze Tetradrachm
« on: November 28, 2017, 12:03:16 pm »
Hello,

I need help with identifying this Celtic bronze tetradrachm. It should be Eastern Celts, but don't know exactly which one or how the reverse design should look like - Horse and a circle underneath the horse is visible. Obverse has probably a triskele or similar shape on the neck and a number of A shapes as the cap / hair.

Weight & size ?

Why do suspect the coin to be Celtic ?

Yes, why Celtic? Why not Carthage?

Here is the additional info:
Weight - 16.58g
Size - 27 mm
It was found in Serbia

Great point for questioning if it is Celtic or not. It was sold to me as Celtic, so I took it for granted while it may be something else. Seller could not identify it exactly.

Thanks Pekka.
It looks like the Cartage coin, however the design seems to be more barbaric then classical. It is highly corroded so it is hard to tell...
The coin and the dirt it was in do not go well together...

I have highlighted the design lines that are visible if you flip the coin in hand, I'm not sure if they are result of the corrosion or if they were part of the design, though they look intentional.

I think the worn features are deceiving but I am in no doubt that your coin was minted in Carthage.

Similar to the coin below, horse walking right.

Thanks a lot guys :) I'm not in doubt as well, it looks a lot like the second coin.

Could you give me the reference so I can look it up?
I know nothing about Carthaginian coins...
