Achaemenid siglos - Countermark
« on: November 06, 2017, 09:03:16 am »
Hi,

I tried my best on this one :)

PERSIA - Achaemenid Empire.
Xerxes II to Artaxerxes II, Circa 420-375 BC.
Siglos
Silver, 16 mm, 5.48 g
Persian king or hero in running stance to right, holding dagger and bow
Countermark of triskeles within circular incuse.

Is the countermark good?

The "countermark" is technically a "banker's mark", punched into the coin by a "banker" or merchant who handled the coin as his mark indicating that the coin was of good metal and weight.

The actual punch seems to closely resemble #23 or #24 on the list of countermarks at the bottom of the article in the link, below.

Thanks!

Looking to the various types, would you agree with Type IV (early)?

Thanks again.

I think early type IV is a reasonable attribution, but I certainly will defer to others far more knowledgeable that I am with these coins.
