Possible Fake Julius Nepos AE - Opinions sought
« on: October 21, 2017, 11:48:57 am »
This "Late Roman Nummus" is being offered at the moment, and I suspect it is
not genuine. I may be wrong, so I would like to ask for additional opinions.

Details as supplied - Weight: approx. 0.9g; Diameter: c.9mm. Dealer's image.

I suspect that it may be similar to those discussed a couple of years ago here:

What is the consensus? I have also offered my concerns to the seller.

The monogram is right but everything else about it is wrong. It looks tooled too (it wouldn't take much to forge a Nepos monogram from a Libius Severus monogram, which are much more common). It's an outrageously rare coin if it were real. Even Kent only knew of a few examples.

The seller has agreed with my assessment, and is now in the process of
withdrawing the coin from sale (might have to be done after it closes).
