an interesting Constantius II Antioch Fallen Horseman
« on: October 12, 2017, 03:04:08 pm »
So this one is a little worn, has a crack in it and I already have a way better example of ric122. However it's an earlier issue of Antioch (a bit harder to find) but what makes this even more special is the spiral shield carried by the Roman soldier. I've seen some with dotted borders, bands/stripes out from the center or across (similar to the British flag) and from various angles (usually from the front) but this is the first spiral shield I've seen.

Constantius II
Antioch
5,24 g / 23 mm
obverse D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right;
reverse FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO, Gamma in left, soldier, with spiral shield, spearing Horseman,hair in braids, bearded, reaching back towards soldier

ANZ Antioch 122

A very interesting find. Congratulations. I have been collecting Fallen Horsemen for several years and this is the first spiral design shield I have seen or heard of.

I was most happy to have found another spiral shield FH. A slightly later issue and an FH4 pose, but from the same officina. Also, RIC 135 lists it with braids, which is lacks. I've talked with David Sear and FH collectors, none can recall seeing this style of shield. I was excited to find another (apologies to the other FH collectors).  On a side not the shield on the ground has an in ring, around the shield boss but it does not show well in the pic.

Really nice details on the shields! The engravers of the early FTR issues of Antioch seem to have generally produced dies of better quality compared to other mints. Maybe that's because Constantius II was living in Antioch at the time?

Antiochene style after Constantine was often more delicate than in other mints; you can see it even in its Maurice and Phocas bronze issues.
