At Rome the same type appeared on denarii with legend PIETAS AVG (not AVGVSTI), obv. HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P.

We know that this type must have been struck at the beginning of the long HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P issue, because it was clearly a continuation of the PIETATI AVG COS III type, showing the same seated Pietas, that had been struck at the end of the preceding issue, with obv. legend just HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS.

That conclusion is now confirmed by the appearance of the same Pietas type, though labeled PIETAS AVGVSTI, on an Eastern denarius. As stated in the long Forvm thread on Hadrian's Eastern denarii under Reading for the Advanced Collector, Hadrian's Eastern series only continued for a relatively short time after Hadrian's obv. legend changed at Rome from HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS to HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P. Therefore any HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P Rome-mint rev. types that the Eastern series managed to copy before it closed must have been produced comparatively early in that long Roman issue.

We also see that the Eastern mint made little effort to keep up with Rome-mint obv. legend changes. The Rome-mint PIETAS AVG type that the Eastern mint copied must have had obv. legend HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P; yet the Eastern mint coupled the copied rev. type with obv. legend HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P, which at Rome had been discontinued several years earlier.

Dear cf,

i think that this is an Eastern minted variant of RIC 3143 see op coin
obverse bust is very similar
legend style very similar

sold as an ancient counterfeit

note.
maybe the TI are illegible, also the vertical scepter is unusual for Pietas

with coin in hand, i am pretty sure its eastern and fully silvered, also it has the same lettertype as the op coin,

Rev. PIETAS AVGVS does not show a beginning of T so it must be PIETAS AVGVS lets see if a better specimen shows up.
at the moment Richard Abdy is on furlough leave, when he is back i can mail him about this coin
