Toning silver coins
« on: October 04, 2017, 06:06:22 pm »
Not sure where to put this topic but here it is.  Just found the best way to tone a coin.  Run it thru a dog.  I believe labradors are best but I have a small sample.  Retrieving it is a bit much.

This looks very promising. Please keep us up-to-date as more samples become available.

If you ever part with the coin, do you intend to include your dog as a former owner of the coin when describing its provenance?

Hadn't thought of that.  She only had it for 24 hours.

I've heard of goats being used. their poo isn't as repulsive as dogs'. They do tend to do it all over the place though, while you're likely to be on hand when the dog goes.

Here,s the culprit , she has lawyered up claiming she has a genetic problem which inhibits her ability to discern colors .  Claims it looked just like a dog treat.

On a serious note,  should I be concerned about the acid in a dogs stomach?  I'm soaking the coin in distilled water.  I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Funny but there is a much easier and safer way to tone silver.  Jax silver blackener...

Apparently the acid didn't do significant harm to the silver. Whatever it did is done now after a good distilled water soak.

Labs are the best, but they are walking stomachs. She has good taste, as that certainly isn't a shabby coin.

Bought it from Joe; the coin not the dog.

Personally, I like the looks of the "after" version.  The toning looks like it could have been completely natural....which technically, you could possibly make an argument for it actually being.

Though I have never tried it, I seriously doubt if "Jax Blackener" will produce the multiple colored toning the pooch poop produced.
Anyone know for sure?

I tried Jax once; didn't care for it.  Maybe I can rent Maggie the Lab out.  I'm sure she's up for it.

To tone a silver coin, put the coin on a small plate in a plastic bag with a raw egg out of the shell (not touching the coin). The sulfur in the egg will tone the coin. I have never actually tried this, but I hear it works well.
