Coins showcase
« on: October 03, 2017, 06:30:03 am »
Hi :)

I'd like to create a little coins showcase similar to that in the image attached (British Museum).
Which kind of nail should I use?

Thanks,
Matteo.

One that does not go through the coin, preferably...  ;)

I'm afraid that the metal of the snail could interact with the metal of the coins and ruin them. Do specific snails exist for this purpose?

I definitely don't recommend using snails of any kind on your coins...

Going back to nails however, unless your environment is particularly humid, you should not have a problem with your standard iron nail. If particularly worried, you could use zinc galvanised nails.

You could also wrap your nail in tape.  Maybe electrical.  As long as no adhesive is exposed it should be ok.  That also eliminates the risk of scratches.

Perhaps black enameled insect mounting pins would work well.

If that is merely fabric pulled over a cork-board, then you could even use wooden toothpicks if you're really worried about metal on metal (and you could always use the toothpicks to dip the snails in butter)

In museum we normally use these kind track fixing pins: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10107702 or http://www.hattons.co.uk/7532/Peco_Products_SL_14_Track_Fixing_Pins/StockDetail.aspx

You can varnish these nails for example Paraloid B-72 but remember it is quite toxic stuff. https://poszukiwacz.eu/product/39/paraloid-b-72-10-w-toluenie-025l.html
