Julia Domna denarius with a pellet
« on: September 24, 2017, 12:48:04 pm »
Hi!

I would like to check with you this denarius of Julia Domna with a pellet in exe on the reverse. I did not find this kind of pellet on this type in my quick search  in RIC and internet. Is it officina mark?... it does not look like die mistake or air bump.

Ob. IVLIA PIA  FELIX AVG Draped bust r.
Rev. DIANA LVCIFERA  Diana Lucifera standing l., holding torch in both hands.

RIC 373 (Caracalla) - variant? - with a pellet in exe (???)

2,8g - 18mm - 7h

Thanks much for your time!

Z.

The pellet should be regarded as accidental, unless other examples from different rev. dies, or contemporaneous denarii of Caracalla also with pellets, can be found.

Caracalla's contemporaneous denarius types according to my reconstruction: TR P XV-XVII Hercules, TR P XV-XVII Serapis, TR P XVI Libertas, PROFECTIO AVG, INDVLGENTIA AVG, MARTI PROPVGNATORI, and MONETA AVG.

Hi folks,

Is Diana holding a torch or a caduceus?

Hi Curtis,

Yes, it seems to be accidental without any other similar cases... but there is no precedent without accident!!!:)...in many instances all rarities derive from some sort of accidents or mistakes(hybrid, mules, etc)

Hi Meepzorp,

It's supposed to be a torch!!!...though I agree this torch looks a bit awkward:)
