Romano-British Fibula
« on: September 21, 2017, 11:03:47 pm »
I've already ordered a book on Romano-British fibulae, but I thought I'd go ahead and post and ask here before I get it. I believe this is a dolphin fibula, but beyond that I am uncertain of identifying or dating it. Looking at the Portable Antiquities Scheme Database with the amount of knowledge I have didn't help too much. Can anyone type and date this?

Dolphin is actually a generic term that covers a lots of similar Romano-British fibulae.

Yours looks like it is a Colchester type, therefore Claudian - Neronian in date (i.e. circa AD 40 - 70) though of course it could have been used for much longer.
