Greek silver coin
« on: September 20, 2017, 06:17:40 am »
Hi
Here's another piece I'm struggling with.
Silver
0.5g
9.3mm (at widest)

I can't decide if it's a helmet on the obverse?
Incuse small animal on the reverse?

Grateful for any guidance.  Many thanks.  ;D

Similar to the reverse on my Phoenician coin from Tyre. Yours is not Phoenician but i have seen this type before, i will have a look tonight if time allows.

Surely better photos would help with this process!

Thank you Walter.
The photos are better than the coin itself. :afro:
If the coin was perfect I wouldn't need any help on the attribution. :P

Definitely Persian era.

Resembles coins of Samaria and is not too dissimilar to bronze coins of Tyre depicting seahorse to right and head of lion. Ref: Elayi and Elayi No.1734-1737.

Seahorse or Hippocamp on the obverse ?

Not in Meshorer (Samaria) or Gitler and Tal (Philistia).

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, this ones got me stumped.

I was thinking lion on obverse, facing, upper jaw at the bottom of the coin.

Hi folks,

As soon as I looked at it, I thought the same thing.

The obverse reminds me of the obverse of one of my Bruttium, Rhegium coins (first coin):

I see what you are saying. But
a) I bought a batch of coins and all the others are from Southern Anatolia.
b) I haven't seen many/any incuse squares on rhegium bruttium coins.
c) I haven't seen the hippocamp / turtle / tortoise / anything similar on rhegium bruttium coins.
Many thanks for looking.  ;D

Hi RD,

I think you mis-understood my previous post. I wasn't implying that there is a possibility that it is a Bruttium, Rhegium coin. I was simply confirming what other posters in this thread have been stating all along, that the obverse depicts a facing lion head. Style-wise, your coin is a match.

Take a look at "A hoard of Greek coins from Southern Anatolia" by E. S. G. Robinson in the Revue Numismatique.  It should be available on-line.  There are several coins described with that reverse.

Hi RD,

It may be an unpublished coin.

I looked through acsearch, but I couldn't find a match.

It is probably an obol, hemiobol, or trihemiobol.

Here's another attempt at photography ::)
Two ears are now visible.  So we are looking at a lion, probably.

Hi RD,

There was never any doubt in my mind that the obverse depicts a facing lion head.

Hi folks,

The reverse looks like Fred Flintstone's pet dinosaur Dino. ;D ::)

With some half-decent images, the depictions seem a bit clearer. I would
search out Cimmerian Bosporus, and see what comes up. The obverse is
similar to other items from that area. Might get you closer at least.
Good luck!

Definitely NOT Lesbos.

It could be that there may not be an exact match available online.
