New Elaia type ? Help for ref.
« on: September 14, 2017, 08:46:46 am »
Hello to the board.

I purchased coin no.1 beginning of August and thougt about a new type of Elaios (coin no.2).
The second part of legend was off. Then, end of August coin no.3 came up at an auction and no.4
in september on ebay. Now it is clear that the ethnic is Elaia/Aeolis - ΕΛΑΙΤΩΝ
and not Elaios/Thrace - ΕΛΑΙΟΥΣΙΩΝ.

But not a trace in WW, AC or Isegrimm.
Is this a new type ? Are there any refs. known ?

1/ 2,50g 14 mm
2/ 3,06g 15 mm
3/ 2,91g 14 mm
4/ 2,33g 14 mm

Thanks for your help.

Martin

Not in BMC.
I don't have all of the newer Turkish SNGs, so it may be in one of those
(if someone else has the opportunity to check).
Also, it appears as though your coins 1 and 3 share a reverse die (maybe
also the obverse die, a better image may confirm either way
).

Hi folks,

Elia is also a town in Italy.

Here is a link:

It is also a town in Sicily.

The town is spelled differently on Martin's coin (Elaia), but the spelling could have changed over the centuries.

Elia (or D'Elia) is a somewhat popular Italian/Sicilian last name. One of my mother's best friends had the D'Elia last name.

I didn't thought about this....interesting Meepzorp. Thank's.
Nevertheless the obverse style fits perfectly with the coinage of Elaia/Aeolis.

Hi Martin,

You are right. The style does match perfectly.

I just provided that information (the Italy/Sicily towns) as a possibility or as "food for thought".

Does anyone know where those coins (with the owl reverse) were found?
