Diobol of Miletos - Particular style
« on: September 01, 2017, 09:34:17 am »
Hi :)

What do you think about this diobol of Miletos? It seems original to me, but it has a very particular obverse.

Thanks,
Matteo.

Any chance it is a fourree?

Sweet OP-coin (congrats, Matteo)

Unfortunately (or fortunately, if it was a fake ;D) the coin is not mine. The weight it seems correct, but the style is very particular. However, if the coin is authentic, it is very interesting.

Ahaha, yah => I agree that it is a pretty cool Lion

... curious, are there many fakes of this obol in the database? (the coin fabric looks good to me)

I've already see that in the fake coins database there are only two coins (keywords: Miletos diobol). However, their style is very different to the coin of this topic.

I'm not an expert of fake coin, but this seems original (it doesn't seem cast, for example...). So what is it? Is it possible that it is an official coin with this particular style? An imitation?

Thanks,
Matteo.

No crumbs...I was just advising Steve P that he asked a question that he could easily answer himself.

The first coin in this thread does not appear to be official Miletos style. I don't recall seeing another like it. Further the raised area below the lion's jaw could be due to bronze corrosion under a silver foil. Or not. I suspect it is an ancient fouree counterfeit.
