Marciana or Matidia fouree
« on: August 07, 2017, 10:46:39 am »
I can't figure out what has happened to this coin. What remains of the obverse legend doesn't correspond with the portrait and the bottom part of the bust overlaps the beginning of the legend. The reverse seems to be a standard consecratio eagle but there's something in the exergue and I haven't been able to find any denarii of Marciana or Matidia with that feature. Can anyone help?

2.28 g and 19.83 mm

IMHO the diadem looks more like Marciana

I hadn't really studied the differences between Marciana and Matidia but the nose on Matidia seems often to be bigger and pointier than the one on Marciana. Plus the portrait on my coin looks like Trajan in drag so you are probably right. Thanks.

Does anyone know where the reverse comes from or have an explanation for the obverse legend/overstrike?

Is it overstruck on a (real?) denarius of antonius pius? The legend on the obverse starts with anton... and there is something under the eagle
