Same Coin ? John III SBCV- 2119
« on: August 06, 2017, 07:06:24 pm »
Coin 1.

18.37 mm

2.4 gm

Coin 2

20.22mm ( At widest point, very thin Flan)

1.8 gm

Coin 2 I am uncertain because the dots are not showing, however that part is missing. Am I correct or is this a different coin? Both coins are in my collection.

After studying the photo ( Its more apparent in the photo than the coin in hand.), the lower coin does appear to have the stars as well, but the design is very different.

Have you seen many examples Ross, are they normally this diversified in style?

Thanks,

Simon

I would give my opinion, but apparently you only want to know what Ross thinks.  Please do not direct your question to only one person, unless for some peculiar reason, they are the only person on the board who can possibly answer your question.

Happy to hear from you Joe, of course your opinion is always wanted and appreciated without question.  I know Glebe specializes in later Byzantine coins, so I have a lot of respect in his replies as well. However in future I will not direct a question to anyone's response.

Hi Simon - actually I have to say that I don't see a significant diversity of style between your two coins. Certainly no more than is typical of issues from this period. Check out other examples of the type (there are a number available via acsearch).
