Parthia & Pegasos
« on: July 30, 2017, 04:33:25 pm »
Well, I may as well try and post one of my new Parthian coins in the correct section, eh?

I think this example is pretty cool ... it has Pegasos rather than the more typical Archer reverse

KINGS of PARTHIA. Sinatrukes.
Æ Tetrachalkon

93/2-70/69 BC
Diameter: 19 mm
Weight: 4.98 grams
Obverse: Ekbatana or Rhagai mint. Diademed and bust left, wearing tiara
Reverse: Pegasos flying right
Reference: Sellwood 33.8 or 33.10 (Gotarzes I); Sunrise –2; cf. Shore 118 (Gotarzes I)
Other: 12h … VF, green and brown surfaces
From the estate of Thomas Bentley Cederlind. Ex Peus 415 (5 November 2015), lot 124.

=> oh, and please feel free to post any of your relevant examples

Yes, and for a bronze, or rather, copper coin, it is in very good condition. An excellent specimen. Incidentally, on the reverses of Parthian bronzes we would not expect to see an archer. The archer with bow is, with very few exceptions (some copper drachms) reserved for the silver drachms.

Let us see your other Parthians, too, Steve.

Hi Steve,

I am not usually a big fan of Parthian coins especially the silver tetradrachms I see regularly for sale. I do not know why.

Having said that, I really like this one! But I am very partial to interesting bronze coins. Also, possibly because the reverse reminds me of indo-greek coinage, which I really like.

Thanks for sharing!

Peter
