Quote from this article: "Langgut examined ancient texts, art and artifacts, such as murals and coins."

Anyone have an idea how the study of coins could give information on the spread of citrus fruits into the Mediterranean area?

Just a SWAG here, but if a coin contains a depiction of some sort of citrus fruit and it can be narrowed down to being struck in a specific location and during a specific period of time time, might that possibly be an indicator that such fruit was known in that area and in the time period during which the coin was struck?

Certainly, it could have existed in the area well before being depicted on a coin, but its appearance could still confirm that is was known at least by that time.
