Hi,

Athena on the obverse and an incuse square (filled dies) on the reverse?

Potentially from Macedon e.g. https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1703704
The head and helmet does look different however so am not 100% convinced it is Athena and looks like I have seen it before but cannot place where.

What do others think?

Peter

It looks more like these thraco-macedonian coins:
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1170150

You find it for example in Babelon, Traité II, 1 as number 1807:
Text: http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k8720106/f627.image.r=babelon%20trait%C3%A9
Plates (the first coin): http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k8720064/f123.image.r=babelon%20trait%C3%A9

These coins are are also mentioned in J. Svoronos. L’hellénisme primitif de la Macédoine, prouvé par la numismatique et l’or du Pangée. Paris and Athens. 1919:
https://de.scribd.com/document/53066919/L-hellenisme-primitif-de-la-Macedoine-prouve-par-la-numismatique-et-l-or-du-Pangee-par-J-N-Svoronos
Several variants are described on page 134 and depicted at the bottom of plate XVI.

For what it is worth, Svoronos' monograph first published as part of a journal is also available to consult or, for some, as a download from hathitrust.org (Journal international d'archéologie numismatique v. 17-20).

I finally found the specimen cited in the Traité in the collection of the BnF  :) :

After you attributed it, it is easy to find more examples.

Here are two with pellets (only two pellets), which are missing on the BnF example:

Hi,

1. There are descriptions in each of the links posted above?

2. Prices are not discussed on this forum as it is against the rules. You can do your own research in finding like coins which are for sale or have been sold and form your own assessment of likely realisable value.
