Domitian with aegis denarius
« on: July 24, 2017, 04:16:42 pm »
Hi!

Aegis is rare enough on denarii of Domitian, so I would like to share this one with you. I do not have the latest book on Domitian, so I do not know if this one is recorded.

There are some signs of lamination on the reverse, but this denarius is not plated.

P M TR P VIII IMP XIX COS XIIII, Minerva with thunderbolt.

3,1g -18mm - 6h

Thank you for your time,

Z.

Hi Zhenia,

I must agree with Eric as I see no aegis (by the way it would be unrecorded for this issue).

If there were any, there would also be evidence of the armor behind the neck.

Kind regards

Alberto

Eric and Alberto, thank you for your inputs!!!!!

If this one was so easy and straightforward I would not bring it up here!...It's tricky, there is something on his chest for sure - that is why I wanted to check...dots are also visible when in hands (sorry my picture is poor, may be I will do a close up when I have time).

Alberto, you also have a coin in your collection with aegis, and without armor behind the neck)))...someone did a mistake in mint, and now we see the consequences)))...

Dear Zhenia,

unfortunately neither Carradice nor Buttrey recognized the presence of the aegis on my coin...

They think of some scratch on the die, perhaps it's the same for yours.

Kind regards

Alberto

...just for the record, below is a close-up of the bust. As you can see there is something sticking out. I agree that it's not aegis as it should be...but still, I believe that it was intended to be an aegis, but the die cutter did a mistake or something happened to the die. Also, couple of years ago I saw the coin from the same issue with the same bust with semi-aegis but in much better condition on some other numismatic forum, probably from the same dies,- unfortunately I cannot retrieve that thread. That other denarius was minted much more prominently, so that this 'semi-aegis' was more evident.
