Lead Statue, Youthful Herakles?
« on: July 20, 2017, 11:04:52 pm »
Hi, all.  Here is an interesting lead statuette from Caesarea Maritima.  I think it must be a young Hercules or perhaps Hermes, but I would welcome any opinions or corrections or advice.  The metal is quite deteriorated but it has been stable for at least 40 years.  Thanks, V-drome

Interesting, again one I have never seen.

I have also never seen a Hercules in that pose, especially with head bent.  (Though I guess that could be post-burial damage.)

Could be some local syncretic version of Hercules, like a Hercules-Melkart??

Hi, Shawn.  The head is a little flattened and cracked, so it could very well be damaged as you said (there is also what looks like a cut on the left shoulder).  The body pose and features also seemed somewhat exaggerated to me.

Thanks, Jimi
