Thessaly, Metropolis/Man-Headed Bull/ex BCD
« on: July 13, 2017, 08:44:34 pm »

I don't often post here in Greek Coins, though I have small and growing collection of nice AEs, many of which are from the BCD Collection. This small AE, (AE21 - Trichalkon) from the 3rd century BC depicts a man-headed bull on the reverse.

2017.187.5; Thessaly, Metropolis; c. 3rd Century BC

Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo right
Reverse: MHTP-OΠOΛΙ[TΩN] ; Forepart of man-headed bull left, head right; monogram below.
Ref: 1) BCD Thessaly II 483.1-3; 2) Rogers 411; 3) Potamikon 497;
Notes: Ex BCD Collection

Nice coin!  It is also catalogued in Potamikon. I believe it shows Acheloios Pamisos as a man-faced bull.

You might have missed it because the heading says "etropolis" not "Metropolis", an unfortunate formatting error when the publisher imported the document to InDesign!

Nick,

Thank you. I have not yet gone to Potamikon, which I should have done before posting - but I got anxious because I have been putting it off so long!

I just received my copy of Πotamikon.

Your coin is very similar to and just as good as the plate coin. Nice!
