Surface/patina/colours
« on: January 05, 2019, 10:16:26 am »
Hi there!
Why has this coin of mine such different colours? It looks to me like the surface has been treated or can it be that the surface reacts in different way due to minting process? //Thanks

IMHO dark black/green patina and  a light brown crust aka dirt. If you remove the crust you will find the black/green patina below.

Looks that way.  The coins looks like it may have been waxed though.  If so the dirt is under wax.

Thanks for the expositions! About waxing, is it still a controversial method?

Depends who you speak to - which I guess means yes.

But as long as you use a normal wax it should be reversible and about the only real detrimental effect can be sealing in corrosion that then continues to act.

It can also seal out moisture, thus preventing corrosion!  ;)
