Small silver Coin/Token/Denar/Pfennig?
« on: July 06, 2017, 03:21:50 pm »
I came across this small silver Coin/Token. It doesn't seem to have any legend. I'm not sure if this is a coin or a token of some sort.
I had this on the Byzantine board and was told it may be Medieval European.
It is silver, 0.8g, with an approximate diameter of 16.5mm.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Hello,

I think your coin may be a 14th century pfennig of Brandenburg, but I have not been able to narrow it down in my reference literature.  I'll keep ;looking tonight and see what I can find.

Regards,

David

Hello again,

Your coin is a denar minted for Margraves Otto V (1267-1298) and Albrecht III (1267-1300) as joint-margraves of Brandenburg-Salzwedel.  Minted at the mint in Salzwedel circa 1296-1298.  Please see images attached. Obverse shows the Margrave standing with a key in each hand, flanked by ringlets.  The reverse features four shields bearing eagles in cruciform, with ringlets in the voids between.  Reference is Emil Bahrfeldt's "Das Münzwesen der Mark Brandenburg," Vol. I, number 338.  Hope this helps.

Cheers,

David
