Silver drachm of abdera Apollo and Griffin
« on: June 28, 2017, 09:43:24 am »
Hi everybody!
I've got this Silver Drachm from Abdera. OBV: Apollo facing right REV: Griffin crouching left.
My only source for pricing is online from other sellers, but the prices are just drastically different.
Could some one help me with the correct price?
Kind regards,
Makoto

Remember that price is greatly dependent on condition.  A small difference in condition may make a great difference in value.

Hi Makoto,

Best for everyone to form their own assessment about value. I think the discussion about monetary value is forbidden on this forum for good reason. Also most of us collect coins for the enjoyment we derive from them, not for their intrinsic value.

Here are some ways you can form your own assessment about value:

You can sign up for a premium account at coinarchives or acsearch and that will give you access to historical prices. I am not sure what premium membership costs.

You can search inventories of any dealers who have it in stock to see what they are selling theirs for and in many cases, what they have sold it for. Start with FORVM and see if they have this or a similar coin in stock. You can also search sold listings on eBay.

You can look on wildwinds which sometimes preserves historical price information in the "text" part of an entry: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/thrace/abdera/t.html

You can look at David Sear's Greek Coins & Their Values which may be helpful in developing a understanding of the comparative value of one coin to another - but I would not rely on it for the actual values themselves given its age.

You can look at the website which accompanies The Handbook of Greek Coinage called Greek coin values. I have not included the link here - but you can google it and it will come up.

Moreover, there really is no "correct price."  A wise old dealer once told me that a coin is worth what the second-highest bid was at an auction.  And again, tiny differences is condition, striking, centering can make enormous differences in price.

Hi Mac,
I always add: "... and only for the duration of that second-highest bid",
as it may not be there next time, nor perhaps ever again. I am aware of
a number of examples of this being the case, and not just with coins.
All the best,

Walter
