"Extremely Rare" Pansa Denarius, RBW 1286?
« on: June 28, 2017, 09:17:54 am »
C. Vibius C.f. Pansa, AR Denarius, 3.38g, Laureate head of Apollo right, PANSA behind, control mark below chin (?) / Minerva in fast quadriga holding spear and reins in left hand, trophy in right, C VIBIVS C F in exergue. Babelon Vibia 2 var.; Crawford342/5a; RBW 1286 ("extremely rare variety"). Ex. Forvm.

Is my attribution correct?  RBW's is in better condition but doesn't show the control mark.

I see no Victory above the quadriga, so your coin
is 342/5b and not rare.

Oh, right.  How did I miss that!  Thanks Pekka.  Is my A just filled in or could this be a different control mark?

Hi Nick,

Here are my Pansa coins:

I also have an example that the dealer classified as an "extremely rare variety". It has a goat head as a control mark.

Hi Nick,

To me, your obverse control mark looks like a squid or a tripod.
