John II Hyperpyron Christ Mary - Greek Inscription help
« on: June 19, 2017, 09:20:24 pm »
I am trying to write out the inscriptions on this coin and ask that someone with more experience with these coins check it out.

Byzantine John II Hyperpyron Christ

Obverse:
Christ on throne holding book of gospels
ΚΕΡΟ ΙϹ ΧϹ ΗΘΕΙ
ΚΕΡΟ is Κυριος, Kyrios or Kyrie (Lord)
ΙϹ ΧϹ is an abbreviation for Ιησους Χριστος or Jesus Christ
ΗΘΕΙ is help or aid

Reverse:
Emperor left being crowned by Mary right
Left: ΙΩ ΔΕϹΠΟΤΗϹ Top: (Unknown) Right: ΜΘ
ΙΩ is Ιωαννης, Ioannis or John
ΔΕϹΠΟΤΗϹ is Despotes or Lord, Master
ΜΘ is Μητηρ Θεου, Meter Theou, or Mother of God

Size: 27mm x 25mm
Weight: 4.18gm
Catalog: Sear 1940
Ex: Harlan J. Berk

Also, can anyone identify the two letters on the top of the reverse?

Thank you.

:)

In Orthodox iconography the Virgin is usually identified by the abbreviation  :Greek_Mu: :Greek_Rho:  :Greek_Theta_2: :Greek_Upsilon_2:  The first two letters usually appear on the left of her halo, and the second two letters on the right.  In this case the inscription is a bit unusual for several reasons.  First, the available space requires that part of the inscription appear at the top rather than on the left side of the halo.  Second, the order is reversed, with the  :Greek_Theta_2: :Greek_Upsilon_2: on the left and the  :Greek_Mu: :Greek_Rho: on the right.  Third, the letters are reversed on the left (in this case top) side.  The letters at the top should be  :Greek_Theta_2: :Greek_Upsilon_2: but here they appear  :Greek_Upsilon_2: :Greek_Theta_2:.  This is not unusual for this type, and DOC lists several similar examples.

Thank you Obryzum for your help with the inscription.

I also noticed that the obverse inscription looks like KERO not KEPO.
Apparently C, R, and V were alternate ways of writing the Greek letters Sigma, Rho, and Upsilon.
