Identification Help
« on: June 07, 2017, 04:01:22 pm »
To the Great Members of FORVM ANCIENT COIN...

I kindly and deeply ask for your help to identify my coin ( 1 coin ) which was given by my late father.

I was advised to look for help in this forum.

I do not mean to trouble you, but i would really hope if you could give me some specific clues for me to identify it. I have tried for days but failed.

Thank you very much for your help and kindness.

Tommy

Apparently an antoninianus (double denarius) of Trebonianus Gallus (Roman emperor from 251-3 AD), with reverse ANNONA AVGG, Annona standing (the goddess of the grain supply).

The surfaces look slightly odd, however, so it may well be a modern replica. Not a valuable coin even if authentic, so you shouldn't be too disappointed!

Diameter: 2cm
Weight: scale battery is dead. Im going to get back to you.

To: Curtislclay

Thank you for the information.

Yes, though i dont know much about the authenticity of a original coin, but i also feel some oddness on the surface.
Is there any value for modern replica and what is the value if it were original?

Value of an original into 2 figures, but not very far in. Forvm rules forbid discussion of value.

See the third picture at between 5 and 6 o'clock, the edge looks odd, possible sign of a modern replica.

In this case, check the edge of the coin. Post a picture of the edge. It seems like that the edge has been filed to hide a possible casting seam and the flan is too round for one of these, in addition the surfaces are "funny" as mentioned earlier in the thread.

I see no evidence of tooling, but the surface is odd, either corroded and cleaned or a cast.  I do not know which.

If another absolutely identical specimen could be pointed to, that would be virtually certain proof that both are replicas. As a general rule, no two authentic ancient coins are ever absolutely identical.

Otherwise, show the coin to a numismatic expert or dealer who is familiar with Roman coins and has a good eye for distinguishing authentic coins from fakes.

Members of FORVM ANCIENT COIN,

I hope these pictures can confirm and proof your findings that my coin is a modern replica one.

Indeed, that edge is worrisome. The file marks and flat regularity/smoothness are not typical for any authentic coins I've seen before. :-[

The edge is bad and typical of cast fakes.  The metal color is not right also.  So, yes, a fake.
