Gallienus bust type
« on: June 05, 2017, 04:06:39 am »
Hello,
there is someone who can help me about this coin?
...sorry for the photo, but the coin is not yet in my hands (I've just purchased it).

I think it's a rare (unpublished?) coin of Gallienus, reverse MARTI PACIFERO with the bust of the emperor seen from behind.
Could someone send me the scan of the Goebl MIR pages dealing about this reverse?

I think it's from Rome mint, but I have not found any other examples with this type of bust.

Many thanks to all... and sorry for my english.

Particular angle of bust. The left shoulder is not here. But not from behind because we see the right shoulder and the fibula.

yes, it's a particular angle of view.
In fact I don't think that is the same of 570r.
but there is like something in front on the middle of the bust: may be an Egida?

Pekka, Ia sk you if, possible, a scan of the Göbl n° 586 g and  Göbl 775 l (this one may be a medaillon).
many thanks.

Does Gobl say nothing about the year and mint of this two coins?

Numbers 570 & 586 are listed in Emission 9/1.
Number 775 has wider range: Emissions 6 - 10.

I think the coin in question shows a bust with paludamentum and cuirass seen from the front. The bust is slightly longer than usual with this bust. Göbl does not list this bust type for this issue. The other two busts as shown are quite different. One has a shouldered caduceus, and the other has a nude bust with an aegis, quite different from a paludamentum, if only the absence of a fibula.

Yes, it's very common. Your coin shows a variant representation of the bust with a slightly longer body.

I saw many and many specimens of coins of Gallienus, but none has this type of bust.
I'm sure that it's not a common bust.
None in acsearch, none in cgb.fr, none at this link http://gallienus.net/
there is not only a particular angle of view but also a different version. The bust is draped with a sort of "Egina".

Evidently it is a rare variant representation of a common bust type.

I am not sure what you mean with 'egina'.

Aha. It can't be that bust with the aegis, because your bust clearly shows a fibula that fixes the paludamentum over the cuirass.
