Gordian III/Lycia, Arykanda/Gordian and God in quadriga
« on: June 04, 2017, 09:45:39 am »

Managed to obtain a very rare (unpublished dies in von Aulock Lycia, at Arycanda for Gordian, though a known coin) beauty from Lycia Arycanda.

1) Lycia, Arykanda
AE??; 20.86 g;

Obverse: AVK MAP AVT ΓOPΔIANOC CEB; Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right.
Reverse: APYK – AN / ΔEΩN; God(Sozon(?)) wearing Phyrgian cap, and Emperor(?) riding in Quadriga right.
Ref: Unique so far. Not listed in von Aulock Lycia, though there is a similar type for Tranquillina. Obverse die also not listed for Arykanda.
Notes: Sold previously as Lot 849 in Lanz Auction 78, 1996.

Wow. What an amazing reverse!

What is its maximum diameter? Or do you not know yet hence the AE??
At almost 21g it must be on a large flan?

Peter

I love how the obverse legend begins all bold and grandiose, only for
the die cutter to realise about half way along, and all too late, that he
needs to add a LOT more to the legend, and it shrinks and tapers down,
squeezing the remaining letters into the whatever space was left.
I wonder at what point that moment of realisation hit him! My guess is
probably somewhere around the 'T' of 'M ANT...'. Oops!

Walter,

I had not paid much attention to that detail but you are quite right - he had an oh s**t moment - "Somehow I got to get whose-its name in!"

thanks for noticing

I think it adds that human element to it all.

Plus, I expect that most of can probably think of a friend, relative, or work
colleague who would be equally capable of doing exactly this sort of thing.

I'll bet some of us have already thought of that person! :) Hehe
