Crispina Ae As - recently cleaned
« on: June 03, 2017, 08:59:17 am »
Hi,

I cleaned this Crispina Ae As from an uncleaned lot I purchased over a decade ago.

It cleaned up rather nicely using toothpicks following several extended soaks in distilled water.

I like the patina.
However the coin is weakly struck and / or very worn.

Also, it was very difficult to determine whether the legend read IVNO LVINA or IVNO REGINA.
This was made more difficult by the flan crack over one of the letters.

After holding it under light at different angles, I could make out enough faint details to be confident it is IVNO LVCINA (BMC 433), not IVNO REGINA.

I thought I would share the end result here.
I will share the others as I clean them but they will take much longer. I have had them soaking for several weeks now.

Peter

There is a third option.  Might be a cast limes falsa.  It certainly has that look from the photos.  What is its weight?

Hi otlichnik,

It is 11.2g which I believe puts it in around the right weight range.

Interesting.
What makes you think it could be a cast limes falsa - the soft appearance? I agree that the features look soft, rather than worn.

Yes, the softness, and what looks like a cooling "crack" or "channel" on the back.  Looks like the cast falsas I have seen.

That makes a lot of sense.

Thank you for letting me know.
