Augustus Dupondius Preservation coating?
« on: June 01, 2017, 10:34:35 pm »
This coin looks a bit too shiny so it's throwing me off. I have two other dupondius coins, but they are worn so I can't really tell.

Maybe it's some kind of protective coating for preservation,  but again I'm not sure. Any opinions would be much appreciated.

I am not a specialist in this area, but it looks authentic to me.  Someone has just cleaned it and then painted it with shellac.  That can be cleaned off.  I imagine it was done years and years ago since I have seen this sort of hand-made mounting in card done long ago.  I would recommend you get the coin out of the card--oh, and I am presuming you own it and are not previewing a potential purchase, since that is not done here.

Makes sense, it's from an old collection. I personally don't like it and will try to remove it.

Thanks for the help

The coin is an As not dupondius, incidentally: note the red copper metal.

The coin was struck by Tiberius, and the radiate crown indicates that Augustus had been deified.

Nero was the first to use the radiate crown on his own portrait on middle bronzes to indicate the denomination, dupondius rather than As.

Good info, thanks. Much appreciated. I'm going to head over to  coin cleaning discussion to see how to go about getting that coating off.

Much Gratitude!

If you do remove it from the card, I would strongly recommend that you do not throw away the card.  It is part of the coin's provenance and history.

Hi paps,

Here is my example (scroll down, fifth coin):

The style of your coin is different.

cmcdon, thanks for that tip about the provenance and history. I will not throw the cards out. That has me thinking to leave the coin as is. Someone suggested acetone, which  will remove the coating and not harm the coin. But that seems kinda harsh.

Thanks again

Hey curtislclay, I have to say, your response actually blew my mind that you would know that.

Again learning a lot here!
