Jay,

Those are great photos. Well done!

Peter
2 new photos of some older coins.  One is in the BOT:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-143340

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-143339

The new pics are superior to the originals but they loose some of the tone they have developed.

Thanks!

Picked up just one coin today at the show in Hamilton.  A tiny Obol with Kantharos on one side and a Bucranium on the other.  When I got home and started researching the type it turns out that this very coin has a pretty long provenance.

Does anyone know about the Dr. P. Vogl collection?

nice one Jay!
these cup/skull types are much scarcer than the typical cup/cup ones. i'll have to check my sources when I get home and see if I can add anything to your attribution. or you can look at the one in my gallery and maybe get some clues (although mine is a 5-dot).

in any case, congratulations on a cool find,
~ Peter

Well, i haven't been able to find another 3- dot, which is interesting in itself.

Vlasto dates these from 302-228 BC, and yours is c.f. 1615-18.  SNG France has three specimens, c.f. 2201-03 (again the dots), and cross-references to Copenhagen 1065 and Munich 784 (although i don't have either of those). HN Italy lists the general type as 918.
I found no examples in either McGill nor Cote.

Thanks Peter,  I appreciate it very much.  When researching it I could only find a photo of this  specimen online.  I don't have any of the book references for this type so just relying on what was on the tag and at acsearch, I knew it had to be pretty rare.  I'll update my gallery.  Thanks again.

Latest acquisition from Terina, Bruttium

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-143802

Nymph on the obverse with a Crab and crescent moon on reverse.  Purchased from ebay on a very poor picture.  Turned out to be a great looking coin.  In hand it has a beautiful glossy black/brown patina.

Terina is located about 20 minutes away from my home town in the mountains above the Savuto river.

Do you have any idea of the significance of the crab _with_ the moon?  Or is it just a crab and a moon?  I am not familiar with crabs on the coins of Terina, but then again, I don't know the bronzes.  Are they rare?  Of course, Croton, who dominated at times Terina, sometimes has a crab secondary symbol on their coins.

Thanks guys.

I've heard from others that the crab was symbolic of joining Hannibal against Rome but I haven't found anything to support that yet.  The Brettian's were originally mountainous peoples who were not Greek so not sure when the crab became known to them.  This is an area where there is very little academic research available in English.  Academia has some papers in Italian but my academic Italian isn't very good.  A great book I'm just finishing is  "Between Rome and Carthage: Southern Italy during the Second Punic War" by Michael Fronda.  Some numismatic info but it's more about the rivalries between the various cities in Southern Italy.  A very good read for anyone interested in the politics of Non-Roman Italic peoples of the 2nd Punic war.

Great coin Jay,

Here is one of mine with a Minerva reverse.
It is amazing how slight differences in the bust make such a difference.
