RP77257. Bronze AE 25, Franke-Nolle, type V, 830 (Vs. A/Rs. 9); Lindgren-Kovacs 976; BMC Phrygia p. 260, 175, aF, obverse off center but on a broad flan, edge crack, porous, Hierapolis (near Pamukkale, Turkey) mint, weight 6.144g, maximum diameter 27.3mm, die axis 180o, Feb 244 - End Sep 249 A.D.; obverse M ΩT CEVHPA, draped bust right, wearing stephane, hair in horizontal ridges, plait up the back of head; reverse IEPAΠOΛEITΩN K CAP∆,IANΩN NEΩK/OPΩN (ending in two lines in exergue), two wreaths side by side with inscriptions within, left wreath XPV/CAN (golden), right wreath ΠVΘ/IA (pythia), OMONOI/A in field above; very rare

Does anyone know the meaning of the two wreaths and the inscriptions within?

Head, HN p. 676: "On the numerous alliance coins other games are also mentioned in combination with the ΠVΘIA of Hierapolis, e.g. Π and X, each in wreath, for ΠVΘIA and XPVCANΘINA (Hierapolis and Sardes)".

In other words on this alliance coin of Hierapolis and Sardes the games commemorated are those of each of the allies. For XPVCANΘINA at Sardes, see Head p. 657.
