Rare Constantine II altar type
« on: April 25, 2017, 06:16:41 pm »
Found by me detecting in Hampshire last month. I don't believe it is in RIC but Alten and Zschucke no 112 appears to be from the same die. .PTR. suggests ?322 AD. Fine state of preservation. Will be self recorded with PAS and added to the corpus of approximately 1200 Roman coins from the site since 2002 - almost definitely a rural shrine. Any more information welcome.

That is a nice rare issue you found from this mint issue. Remarkable variation of  ornate busts
Here is one I just added

Treveri (Trier) mint, 1st officina. Struck AD 322-323. Laureate bust left, wearing trabea and holding eagle-tipped scepter / Globe set upon altar, inscribed VO/TIS/ XX in three lines; three stars above; •PTR•. RIC VII 385.

Thanks Q, for your coin and reference link. Constantine Ii was about 5 years old at this time and was Consul in 322/1 with Constantine, Crispus, Licinius and his son, Licinius Ii. In 323 at about age 7, went with his Dad on a campaign against the Sarmartians.
Crispus also had very elaborate bust styles from Trier with this issue.

Crispus, as Caesar. 317-326 AD. AE nummus (2.66 gm). Trier, 322-323 AD. IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES, laureate, draped, cuirassed half-length bust right, holding spear in right hand and horse by the bridle in left hand / BEATA TRANQVILLITAS, globe on altar inscribed VO/TIS/XX, three stars above. Mintmark dot PTR dot. RIC VII Trier 372 var (obverse type). cf. RIC VII 381 for Constantine.

Two more from Wildwinds site
One with SOL on globe instead of Victory and another with Constantine Jr giving the Imperial HI Five or gesture

Thanks for the additional information and to everyone who posted their variants. Much nicer coin in the hand than my poor photo, a pleasure to have in my collection.
