The Chaman-i Hazouri hoard and ancient coins from Kabul
« on: April 18, 2017, 01:50:30 pm »
Hi :)

I'm not sure it is the right place to post this topic...sorry ::)

Recently I learnt of this hoard discovered near Kabul in 1933. Unfortunately, these coins were stolen from Afghanistan National Museum between 1992-1994 but we have a few images and information on the web.

I add some information about the composition of the hoard:

"In 1933 a building that adjoined Chaman-i Hazouri was under construction, and in the foundation an ancient pot was discovered containing jewelry and approximately 1,000 coins — including 6th and 5th century BC Gandharan bent bar silver pieces, coins of local manufacture, as well as 5th and 4th century BC Achaemenid period coins of Persian origin. The Chaman-i Hazouri Hoard, as it is now called, was probably buried ca. 380 BC, since no coin in the pot dated from after that time. The exact number of coins discovered at the construction site may never be known; 127 coins were recovered and taken to the National Museum for further study."

I think that the so called "coins of local manufacture" are very interesting and I've never seen them before. In these link there are some images of the coins from the Region of Kabul.

And you can find other information also in this paper:

Does anyone have more details about this coinage?

Thanks,
Matteo.

Very interesting types, I have never seen these before either. The local types seem to be very rare or unique.
