Unusual Portrait of the Day

I couldn't help but add this denarius with a strikingly unVespasianic portrait. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-136027

If anyone has another portrait of his that looks more like Vitellius I'd like to see it!

I really like these early Flavian coins.  Yours is even more distinctly Vitellian then usual.

And to illustrate just how 'Vitellian' this portrait really is.

Interesting :).., and nice :)

You know this sometimes happened ..

Early Traianus are similar to Nerva..

Early Aurelianus are similar to Claudius II....etc..   :) +++ ;)

Neat.

These seem to be cases of coins struck in the "Dear senior mint official.  The Emperor is dead, long live the new Emperor.  Please strike coins in the name of the new guy.  Portrait (imago) to follow in the mail." period.

Hi David,

Here is another portrait that looks like Vittelius, as for me. Is not it? I would much appreciate an opinion from connoisseurs  of Flavians)...

Could it be also one of the unmodified portraits of Vitellius, though  of  bit different style in comparison with yours and Jays coins. Below I will post couple of coins of Vitellius with similar portrait features (borrowed from acsearch).

2,8 g - 18mm - 6 h

Thanks much!

Z.

IMHO, it does have some Vitellian traits, but not overtly so. Certainly it's one you could classify as a 'transitional' portrait.

Now, that is very Vitellian-like and unusually heavy!
