V neck drapery Marcus Aurelius (and Lucius Verus too)
« on: March 21, 2017, 05:51:38 pm »
Hi!

Generally, draped busts are common for Marcus Aurelius, especially when the right shoulder is forward and some folds of drapery are seen on the right shoulder of Marcus. But sometimes, I used to get across much rarer kind of draped bust on Marcus's denarii- when the right shoulder is naked most probably, and therefore is not portrayed by engraver. Additionally, the drapery appears to have a V-neck shape on the chest, as the bust is more revealed, as it's seen from the front.

Here is this kind of uncommon drapery on Marcus TR POT III/Providentia denarius. Notably, draped bust of this Providentia type is not recorded by RIC and RSC. May be this is a new variety.

ob. AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F bare head, bust draped right  seen from  the front
rev. TR POT III COS II Providentia stg left

18mm, 3,04g, 6h

RIC 448 (bust var) , RSC 628 (bust var)

NB! It's not plated! - it's solid silver denarius with slight 'lamination' on surface

Here I put together three denarii with this kind of v-neck drapery ( two denarii of Marcus and one of Lucius - the one I  posted here couple of years ago, so Curtis and Rupert then disclosed their respective specimens of Lucius with this uncommon kind of drapery).

So, this kind of bust (seen from the front) appeared in the times of Pius/Aurelius/Verus here and there.... Was this style of drapery in fashion, or this was just the engraver's interpretation, who knows?)... . though in the times of Trajan and Hadrian the bust seen from the front was much more ubiquitous.

Thanks much  for your time!

Z.
