Kos v. Pergamon Redux: Asklep/Serpent AEs
« on: March 20, 2017, 09:58:46 am »
Top:  my coin  18 mm, 5.3 g
Middle: From acsearch.info; 17 mm, 4.42 g; KOS, SNG Munchen 535 var.
Bottom: From Wildwinds; 17 mm, 3.82 g; Pergamon, SNG Cop 401; BMC 164

Two years ago, there was a Forum discussion thread on Asklepius/Serpent entwined on staff, regarding city.  https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=101599.0
Attribution was acknowledged as uncertain at best.  I have two coins that I’d posted long ago identified as from Pergamon, but after seeing a new offering on the Forum shop, and following up with some further reading, I question whether my coins are from Pergamon, Kos, or (as hinted occasionally) Antioch

I’m separately posting my two coins on Identification Help, with the questions:
Have there been any changes in opinions regarding origin?
What is the opinion on my coin?
If pronounced uncertainty exists, what is the best way to identify and attribute the coin?

Here is one of the coins.

Many thanks for your thoughts.

Hi laney,

I have a Roman Provincial, Caria, Kos, Augustus AE coin with a similar device on the reverse (first coin):

The most recent attributions I know of are still those of Butcher and McAlee, claiming that these coins are from somewhere in Syria. The exact references can be found here:

A further hint is the fact that this coin type is not mentioned in the 2012 article about the hellenistic coins of Pergamon by Jérémie Chameroy "Chronologie und Verbreitung der hellenistischen Bronzeprägungen von Pergamon: der Beitrag der Fundmünzen", Chiron 42, 2012, 131-181.

Perhaps the best way to attribute the coin is to live with the uncertainty  :) .

Regards

Altamura

Thank you Meepzorp and Altamura.  Ah--uncertainty.  I can deal with uncertainty; but then again I'm not sure.
