Domitian
« on: March 18, 2017, 10:08:33 pm »
For those with more knowledge and better eyes, is this a fake? I can't find it in fake coin reports.
I have it marked "fake," from 20-30 years aqo, but golly it looks good. 27 mm, 12.05 grams. Edge OK for the most part but an irregular small seam segment in two separated spots, and one small flattened segment.
Thanks
PeteB

Hello,

I think this is a cast, letters and dots in front of nose are badly impressed and soft , all the coin is soapy...

Thank you, friends.
The photo provided by Pekka is particularly telling. My coin appears to be identical to it.
Hence, Joe may be correct. The coin is in the BM, apparently, so if it is the "host coin," who else but the BM would have access to it to make a cast impression? The coin might be very well an electrotype....and made by the BM. Speculation, yes, but I am unaware of other electrotype makers, especially who would have access to this BM example.
Pekka, I cannot see differences in the reverses, but with my old eyes.....
Did the BM make cast copies?
Comments?
Thanks again!!!

There should be a fairly obvious seam on the edge if it is an electrotype. Other that that, they are nearly perfect copies.

Even if not an electrotype, it might be a cast taken from the impression of an electrotype.
