Welcome on the FORVM and thanks for your wishes!

The upper coin is from Baktria, Demetrios I. Please, take a look at http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/i.html

BTW: It is not allowed to discuss prices on the FORVM. But Wildwinds often has them listed.

Best regards

The second coin seems to be a tetradrachm of Plato, with the date MZ in exergue (possibly Bopearachchi 2A), although I don't really see Sol in the chariot. To my knowledge he's the only Baktrian king with a quadriga on his reverses.

Are you sure of their authenticity? Graeco-Baktrian coins are very often forged and this coin is extremely rare. I have therefore some doubts.

Only seven coins of Plato are listed on acsearch: https://tinyurl.com/sgxolra

Regardless of that, you have to give the weight and diameter if you want to sell. Also write descriptions with references and take pictures with a better resolution.

Both coins appear to be crude cast fakes

Can you fill me in on what give them away to you? The obverse bust of one that has been identified as Plato does look cast or wrong in general to me. Particularly the back of the head and the left side generally, but I am certainly not an expert.

I ask purely so I can be a better coin buyer myself. I am sure you're right.

I think the "Evidence of Casting" study images on the Fake Coin Reports are darn effective at teaching how to detect cast fakes. After going through those images, anyone should be able to spot most cast fakes. Unfortunately, on the better-made cast fakes, all the clues can be extremely subtle and may go unnoticed even by experts.

It also helps that I have seen other examples of these two cast fakes in the past.

All historical inquiry is contingent and provisional, and our own prejudices will in due course come under scrutiny by our successors.

These are fairly obvious and very common casts. There are much better casts of other coin types.
