Now that is a rare coin you have there quadrans!

I am fascinated by the transmutation of Classical art into Medieval art through the dangerous confusion of the Dark Ages. What am I seeing in this extraordinarily primitive portrait? The things that seem to have impressed the ancient die cutter most are the pearl diadem and the kings armor, which looks like scale armor. Both have been exaggerated to the point of overwhelming the details of the Kings human face completely.

The style of portraits of King Theoderic on coins struck in Rome drew on the Classical artistic heritage making them decidedly Byzantine in appearance. But your Sirmium example was clearly created by someone with no knowledge or understanding of Classicism. I think this little coin is telling us life in Sirmium must have been truly been Dark at the time.

I suppose that at this time it was social position that mattered, so if the king had a diadem of pearls that meant he had great wealth, and if he had very good armor he was therefore a powerful warrior who could impose his will on others.

I have taken the liberty of copying your coin and highlighting what I think I see in the obverse portrait.

Another very interesting coin in your great collection my friend, congratulations.

Best regards,
Steve

After seeing images captured by Steve (Gallienus), I remembered an old method.
I was used that as a young collector at the 60s (at that time was not easy to take photos of the coins/medals) .:

Simple "chocolate paper" Using (a very thin aluminum foil), placed over the coin and the foil are pressed by helping the toothbrush .
So we got a well-used copy of which can be studied later, it was very useful, especially when the coin was not in our own collection.

This is now tested, evaluated can manage surprisingly well prepared for this coin, so more details can be seen better, like Steve as indicated ..

 Enjoy:

Thank you so much Q, I had completely forgotten about the technique using aluminum foil!

Seeing your great results I quickly used it on a small AE4 of Constans that has a tight flan and uneven patination.  I was very impressed how well it worked. Although I can’t show you just how much clearer my aluminum impression is over the coin itself is, because my scanner has become faulty and now can only do poor resolution scans.

A pity, but even so I hope with the poor scan you can at least see some of the improvement in clarity that is easy to recognise in the hand.

If a coin has a very dark patina or an irregular patina with different shades and colours the technique is clearly very useful. You can always photograph or scan such coins in black and white which can help, but the aluminum foil technique gives you the image in 3D that you can move a light source around to move the low shadows and bring out detail.

Thanks again my friend, I am now going to try it out on a worn follis of Anastasius.

Best regards,
Steve
