I indulged myself
« on: January 30, 2017, 11:38:43 am »
Today I bought this really lovely Antoninus Pius sestertius. It is a rather common type, readily available in various states of preservation, but seldom in this condition.
ANTONINVS AV - G PIVS PP TRP XVII his laureate head right ( text break is rather unusual)/
INDVLGENTIA AVG COS IIII SC (in ex) Indulgentia seated left,  extending right hand and holding transverse sceptre.
This type was issued during his 16th and 17th tribunician year (152-154 AD).
It was catalogued by Cohen as number 454, RIC 914a, BMC 1939 and Strack 1091.

Hope you like it.

Finally got in from Serbia! Wonderful in hand and a whopping 27.5 grams combined with a medallic strike. 32 mms . Showed it to my wife, who was impressed but fortunately did not ask more... ;D

I've always adhered to the "do(es)n't ask....don't tell" school of thought when sharing numismatic purchases with my wife.

In all honesty: I believe that investing in ancient coins at the present moment is much better than letting your money rot in the bank! In Holland we are supposed (by law) to 'earn' about 2.5 % with our savings, which profits are taxable at 42 or 52%. In that respect I am convinced that my investment in ancients is the right way!

Here in the US, I think many of us would kill for a guaranteed 2.5% interest rate.

At one of the institutions I deal with, a 5 YEAR certificate of deposit only pays 2.0% annually, with interest forfeiture penalties for withdrawal before the 5 year period is up.  And then you owe taxes on the interest of course....although generally not in the 42-52% range.

That being said, I too have been putting a bit more money into coins over the last few years.  And while there is never any guarantee of turning a profit when we eventually sell, making wise decisions on what to buy can certainly help increase the odds of at least not losing money.

Here too, but it is the revenue board that say we are getting this percentage out of our money while in every day life that is impossible. Yet we have to pay out taxes as if we got 2.5% interest. That is what most people find very unfair. But a collectible is not seen as money...

That's a wonderful sestertius. Excellent state of preservation and sharply struck.
