Antiochos I soter tetradrachm
« on: January 19, 2017, 05:46:45 pm »
I originally won this last year but received it at the beginning of this year. This may very well be my coin of the year.

Antiochus I Soter, 281 – 261
Tetradrachm, Seleucia on Tigris 281-261 BC, AR 17.09 g. Diademed head r. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ – ANT – IOXOY; Apollo seated l. on omphalos, holding arrow in r. hand and resting the l. on bow set r. on ground; in r. and l. field, monograms. ESM 177. SC 379.6c. SNG Spaer 296.
ex NAC, Auction 97, lot 302, ex CNG sale 99, 2015, 324

Perfect surfaces, great toning. A well-executed portrait, though I always wonder why he looks so timid and sad.
I think I 'traded' close to a hundred coins for this one.

In my life I have seldom seen a better coin, and I have seen a lot of coins.

Congratulations my friend.

Best regards,

Steve

Congrats Andreas, it is conserved in an astonishing way, as struck yesterday, and the bust is so aliveitis a treasure. Nice start for this year.
