great Help needed to Id this Greek script
« on: January 19, 2017, 02:02:21 am »
Dear Board;
Is that a Byzantine lead Tesserae or Greek weight?Pb 12mm-1,5g[ Greek_Kappa Greek_Theta_2/ Greek_Iota Greek_Pi_2]
I appreciate all help
Regards
PS:According to the Moderator advice[section lead & Tesserae] i post this item in this section

"Kappa and theta would be the number of 29, and I can't think of a way that would make sense for a weight. However, I am not sure that horizontal bar means 'number' in Byzantine times, as it certainly did in Roman times. A bar like that means a contraction on Byzantine coins (IC XC for 'Iesous Christos' always has a bar on top). Gamma might be 3 for 3 nummi, making this perhaps an emergency issue in lead. There exist small denominations in lead.  But an explanation of the obv. has to be offered to be sure. Perhaps a posting in the BYzantine coin section would be a good idea."
Regards
Gert

Hi Mike,

From my point of view it is a Greek lead seal, no weight.
I read KB (not K :Greek_Theta_2:)in ligature, an obviously abbreviated Greek name.
Also recognizable is a part of the cord channel.

I have to disagree with Basil there. In Byzantine times, lead sealings were made with a boulleterion, which had the channel running through the middle. I don't see any evidence of that (perhaps can Mike?). So that irregulariry on top can't be a chord channel. It's probably caused in the striking process. This object resembles some of the lead nummi or perhaps it is some kind of token.

Looking very closely to the item,i can't see traces of hole or chord channel ???,I agree with Gert also about the irregularity on border:it's probably stricking problem
Great Thanks for all your comments and valuable help
