Hadrian Denarius Roma 134-38 AD Hadrian & Roma standing
« on: January 07, 2017, 11:59:12 am »
Dear coin friends,

This is a rare variant on RIC II 227, (Roma right and Hadrian left)
i was wondering if you see as i do a parazonium on hip, withs means it Virtus standing.

Reference.
Strack 218; RIC cf 227; C.cf 94;

Obv. HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P
Bare head right

Rev. ADVENTVS AVGVSTI
Roma standing left, holding spear, and parazonium on hip and clasping hands with Hadrian standing right, holding a roll

3.35 gr
18 mm
7h

Note.
Strack saw two similar coins in Vienna and Sofia with same die pair.
All the Best,
Eric

Hi Oki,
I see an object especially when I put photo on negative mode.
Should not the Parazonium be a little longer ? With rounded top to be recognized.
Maybe you are right and it is a small roman sword, a parazonium is not very long about 35 to 50 cm in length (numiswiki)
All the Best,
Eric

The togate emperor is holding a rolled page of parchment, traditionally called a "roll".

Interesting!

I don't see a parazonium at Roma's hip in the few other illustrations of the same type that I find in CoinArchives, Berk photofile, BMC, Strack.

Yes, I meant, "apart from the die identical denarius in Strack that you refer to".
