Flacilla or Placidia
« on: November 30, 2016, 06:17:30 am »
Hi,

I recently bought this little puzzle. Its a small nummus (AE4, 1,7 gm), late roman.
On the obverse appears to be the portret of AEL FLACILLA, altought V PLA suggests another empress. The back has a standing? figure with a ball? on it's her feet. The lettering is unclear. Could be Gloria Romanorum?

Flacilla has AE2 coins with a standing figure. This one is definitaly not AE2 (half it's weight). Placidia has another style of portret.

IS this a rare (not) recorded example or could it be barbarian?

Any suggestions are welcome,

Yours Svir

It does look like CONCORDIA AVG, Empress enthroned facing, arms crossed over breast, star in left field, for Galla Placidia.

The obverse should be: AEL PLACI - DIA AVG which matches yours.

RIC-X-Theodosius II-426 (star in right field), LRBC-II-2229 (star in left field).

Quite rare.

wow,

I think you could be right.
Altough there are not pictures on the internet, I did find this link:
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=559966
which is RIC X 428 (eudoxia). The reverse indeed looks remarkably the same. I think you made me a happy collector  :D

Many thanks,

Svir
