Thanks , quadrans and Stkp, museumguy and Robert L,
sorry I don't always reply in time.  Your thumbs up are appreciated.
Steve, the Phraates III archer does look funny. It also has two horns and looks quite devilish.
Stkp, you are indeed stretched out quite a bit. What generated your interest in Hungarian coins?

Schatz

For those of us whose collecting interests are not squarely within the mainstream, the question of what generated our interests in our core collections would actually make a good topic. What generated your extremely focused interest in Parthian coins, Schatz? Stkp

Hello again after a long while,

in the -at least for the time being- last chapter of my gallery headed 'Plate Coins' I have compiled a handful of Parthian and Elymaian coins that have appeared with a photograph in the relevant literature on Parthian and Elymaian coins. These are not newly acquired pieces, i.e. they already figure in the appropriate chapters of my gallery. The idea was to make it easier to locate and view certain coins without having to go through my entire gallery. The chapter 'Plate Coins' will be followed (in the near future) by a compilation of my tetradrachms - the number of times viewed in the gallery proper indicate that the greatest interest is in tetras.

Hoping to find some new coins one of these days,
Schatz

Thanks, quadrans,

these here are not new, but as I say, I am hopeful to find some new coins one of these days. It seems that the field is getting narrower, actually, there are only four or five coins left which I lust after, and they are hardly ever on sale. You don't seem to have this problem, but then, you picked a larger pool of possible to begin with.

Regards,
Schatz

Hallelujah.  Find 'em, buy 'em.  Then, having finally met your goal, start selling off some of this amazing collection to me.   ;D

A spectacular achievement - actually two.  Not just the building of such a great collection, but the documentation - the educational resource - that you've provided, gratis, to all of us.

Well done, Schatz.

Hi Bob,

I have a feeling that I may be looking for those four or five coins for the rest of my life. Well, it's good to have a goal to the very end.
Thanks for your kind remarks. Without your patient encouragement and guidance I would never have started a gallery. Now that I have some time at my hands I will take a closer look at some of those coins and see if I can trace their pedigrees a little better.
How are your Elymaians going?

Best regards,
Schatz

I anticipate uploading some of my recent Elymaean pickups in about two weeks, Schatz, and I've got bids out on a couple more.  Thanks for asking.

I have been under the radar for quite a while but am now ready to upload some more coins to my gallery.  Here are the first Elymais pieces and then, over the next days/weeks, I will continue with more Elymais coins and a handful of Parthians:

1. A bronze drachm of the usurper Tigraios: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158530;

2. A AR tdr of Kamnaskires V.: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158534;

3. A BI tdr of an unknown Early Arsacid ruler: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158536;

4. Another BI tdr of an unknown early ruler: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158535;

5. My favorite Elymaian ruler, a BI tdr of Kamnaskires-Orodes: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158544.  Sorry about the dar picture, but the coin is almost black.

Hope you enjoy looking at these,
Schatz

Dear Schatz and Board,

Your drachms with "attractive verdigris patina" look a bit like the pieces from the massive "Robinson" hoard.  Certainly the types fit.  Compare your group with my "three kings":

Handsome specimens you have regardless!

Hi Mark,

could well be.  Your specimens seem to have more verdigris than mine, but this is difficult to tell since every picture of these coins seems to turn out differently.  I would be flattered if my verdigris bunch happened to be from a known hoard, and perhaps with genuine patina and not something added recently from a bottle.  I also have a group of drachms with 'desert sand' traces - some of which I will post in the following days -, and again I am a bit suspicious about the origin of the sand.

Still, fun to handle these genuine or improved coins from 2 millennia ago!

Regards,
Schatz

Some more AE drachms, the first one a straggler from my verdigris batch, an Orodes III.:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158797,

next an Orodes II.:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158798,

another nice portrait of my favorite villain, Kamnaskires Orodes III.:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158799,

this is the first in my 'desert sand' series. Again, I am not quite sure if the enhancement is genuine:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158801,

the last of today's drachms, an Orodes IV. which looks a lot better in hand:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158803,

The Phraates tdr is one of my later acquisitions; I believe it is quite rare:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158804.

Well, this is it for today.

Great additions Schatz.

Fyi, the first coin you list among the new uploads - the Orodes III - is a VH 16.1.1-3A, with a reverse of Artemis wearing a calathus, and with "King Orodes" legend. Your coin has remarkably sharp lettering for the type. It's not, as you currently have it listed, a VH 16.2, the Belos reverse type. The 16.2's don't have legends - and they feature a cornucopia behind the Belos bust.

Thanks, quadrans, Mark, Stkp, and Robert for the ongoing encouragement. quadrans, I am in permanent awe of your galleryRobert, of course, you are right about the Orodes III. Sloppy and tired attribution on my part - mea culpa.  Will change it forthwith.  I know you have 2 Phraates  V.H 14.7 tdrs, they are impressive.

There will be more once I have taken a few more pics.

Schatz

Enough Elymaians!! I pulled out a handful of Parthians from my most recent acquisitions (i.e. within the last 2 years), and finally got my cards and pictures sorted out. These are the first pieces, early Parthians, Artabanos I. and Mithradates II.

The first one is an interesting fourree drachm of Artabanos I, Particularly liked this cute necklace:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159101;

Then a lovely example of workmanship - unfortunately the obverse is little weak, but still quite distinct:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159104;

This Mithradates II. was difficult to resist though I have 2 others with the same reverse monogram, but this coin is in such good condition:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159103;

Here the experts are not quite sure if this is a 28.2 Mithradates II. or a Gotarzes I. drachm:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159105;

and last this lovely dark toned Mithradates II. tetra on a large flan with a rare monogram on the reverse:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159106;

Here's trying hard to get the next batch together for uploading.
And a lovely holiday season to all coin enthusiasts,
Schatz

A little while ago I bought a group of Parthian bronze drachms of Artabanos II. which I found ugly but interesting enough to want to have. Artabanos, an Arsacid on the distaff side, was deposed twice during his reign by the Romans after 35 AD, and both times he sought refuge with his paternal tribes in Central Asia. He had an unusual amount of bronze drachms of rather primitive design and poor quality minted, and it seems likely that he did so during these times when he was confined to the East.  In any event, I thought you might want to take a look at these coins:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159220;
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159219;
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159218;
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159217;
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159216;

One AR dr I just bought because it was so well struck and of good metal quality though I have some other Sellw. 71.3:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159222;

The next coin is a. AR diobol of Vologases II. that has an almost identical bronze twin (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-124775):
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159221;  I think both a quite rare.

Somehow this BI Vologases I. tdr wound up in my hands; it is of decent strike and relatively good metal for the issue:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159223.

A lovely holiday to all,
Schatz
