The Elymaean gallery is shaping up to be as impressive as the Parthian.  What an amazing collection, Schatz!

Randigeki and Bob,

thanks for your comments. I am afraid I am nearing the end of my Elymais tray. Just enough left for one more addition, and another handful of coins with more or less severe bronze disease.

Hello again,

these are the last of my Elymaean coins, 3 Prince B drachms with extraordinary hairstyles, 2 small coins which could be hemidrachms or perhaps even obols, and 1 tdr of Orodes I. that seems to have been up for auction at least once a year but some years ago found a permanent home with me:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-136279;

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-136281.

The next group I would like to post on Forum are coins that somehow have to do with the Parthians, like some Imperial Romans, Sassanians, Persis, Kushan, Dahai, and the like. There are too few to each form their own chapters, so they will get lumped together under one headline. Hopefully I will get the attributions right. Corrections and advice would be very welcome, as with all posted coins.

A happy holiday from
Schatz

Hello again,

I have begun uploading an Achaemenid coin and drachms and hemidrachms from Persis into a new Album named Parthia Related Coins. It has been interesting to learn a little more about this group of coins that I know next to nothing about. Therefore I would be grateful for corrections in the descriptions of the individual coins if there are mistakes, and forgive me for those.

Hi Schatz,

I don't collect these and am in no way familiar with them. However very nice coins and I am impressed with the photo. You managed to bring out the 'high relief' of the Parthian coins quite nicely.

Been enjoying the pics, Schatz.  Never collected Persis, but these are lovely coins and I can understand the appeal.

Thanks, Peter and Bob,

I don't really collect Persis either, I was just intrigued by the hair and hat styles of these 'Persian' contemporaries of the Parthians and bought those which showed great similarities. The successors of the rulers of Persis and conquerors of the Parthians, the Sassanians, show only one concession to Parthian fashion, as far as I know, the BI tdr of Ardashir which shows a tiara. And Persis coins were easy to photograph, not like the Achaemenids and their chunky sigloi.

I have added 2 hemidrachms and 5 obols minted by the Daoi (lat. Dahae) that show 3 distinct styles. The first hdr shows a ruler profile w/orientation to the right on the obv. and a beautiful horse’s head on the rev.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-137972.

The style of contemporary obols is quite different: head orientation to the left and a facing archer/soldier with the famous B-shaped bow. The figures are heavily stylized but all show a belted tunic, the typical dress of the mounted steppe peoples. Some rev. seem to suggest a short sword worn on the right side:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-137973,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-137974,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-137975,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-137976,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-137977;

The second hemidachm is thought to be from a later period though it appears to be an earlier coin if one considers the almost East Asian features shown on the obv.. The archer/soldier figure on the rev. is barely recognizable:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-137978.

All of these were probably minted roughly at the same time as the much more elaborate Parthian coins - the earliest Parthian coins are dated at around 210 BC.  Apparently the former were produced by the two tribes who stayed behind when the Parni split and migrated south.

Hope you will find them interesting enough to look at,

Schatz

Hello, all you rare lovers of Parthian coins,

with the summer being as good as gone, I have resumed posting Parthia related coins. The first group of 4 AR drachms could also have been listed as Indo-Parthians, as the ‘Eastern Parthian’ copper coins could have been. I called their provenance ‘Sakastan’ to narrow down their origin. Their characteristic is that they carry countermarks on an original or imitated Parthian drachm:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-139837,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-139840,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-139844,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-139845;

The following group consists of 4 AE tetras from Charakene:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-139849,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-139850,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-139851,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-139852.

The plan is to post some Indo-Parthian coins, tetras from Kushan, Sasanian tetras and Romans as soon as I get them organized.

Please, take a look,
Schatz

These are some great examples. The second two drachms are particularly intriguing. It looks to me like the dies were engraved with faux Eukratides-style countermarks and that they weren't really punched into the coins at a later date. Would you agree? It's worth noting that the other non-imitation coins have flat spots on the reverse where the countermark was struck.

Hello friends,

it has been a while, but with the weather taking a turn for the unpleasant there will be lots more time to concentrate on hiterto unfiled coins. At long last I have added to the Parthia Related Sections of my gallery some more central Asian coins:  3 Indo-Parthians, 1 Turan, and 5 Kushan AE units. These are the links:

1 Orthagnes AE tdr with an obv. portrait that is strongly reminiscent of Pakoros
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-140678,

1 AE Gondophares dr of the better quality kind from Jammu
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-140679,

1 AE Gondophares dr from Jammu of the lesser quality of which millions were in circulation
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-140680,

1 Turan AE tdr with a portrait of Ardamithra, again very reminiscent of a Parthian hair style
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-140681,

5 Kushan rulers,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-140888,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-140889,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-140893,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-140890,
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-140891.

The next batch are Roman bronzes and denarii with a Parthian event reverse. Sorry, no Labienus but I still hope you will take a look.

Best wishes,
Schatz

Great additions,

I like the "Soter Megas" Kushan coin. Here is mine.

I think Kushan coinage is underrated and it surprises me that collectors seem to be few in numbers. Except for the gold coinage, they are very affordable.

I have a couple reference texts and working my way slowly through bulk lots of bronze coins (mostly uncleaned) I picked up a long time ago.

Peter,

that is a very well defined image of your Soter Megas. I completely agree with your assessment of Kushan coins and find that collectors (myself included) tend to overlook a fascinating field that is both affordable and stimulating for its diversity of symbols, legends and deities.
Enjoy your journey of discovery through your piles of bronzes. Incidentally, how do you go about cleaning them? Bronzes are so vulnerable.

Hi Schatz,

Thanks!

I am going about cleaning them slowly.

Some just required quick rinsing in distilled water as the dirt was superficial only. For others I am soaking them in distilled water for extended periods of time.

When I first started out, I was in a hurry to clean coins. I was reasonably proficient with a diamond dusted dental pick under  magnification. Nowadays I have so many to work through and attribute that I am in no hurry to add more to the work pile. Doing it the long way will hopefully yield better results.

There are some great cleaning instructions on this discussion board.

For Kushan coinage, if you do not already have it, I recommend picking up a copy of SNG ANS. It is an invaluable reference. Prior to this I was using a Kushan reference text that is several decades old and the coinindia website.

Thanks, Peter, for the recommendation. I don't have the SNG ANS yet but will be looking out for it. For my meagre Kushan collection Mitchener's somewhat outdated (but great for legends) work and the late Tom Mallon's important website 'The Coins and History of Asia' were  the works of reference.
I agree there is some excellent advice on coin cleaning on this site. I just don't have the courage to start on some hopeless Elymais drachms

It's me again with another handful of coins which I hope will be worth a look.

Not surprisingly, I could not resist the last CNG e-Auction’s offerings of Indo-Parthian and Kushan bronze or copper coins from the collection of Dr. Pieper.  So I bid on 4 coins that were offered at reasonable estimates and got them. The others were definitely serious collector’s items and way out of my reach.

Here they are:

I have posted the first 3 of my Roman coins with a connection to events involving the Parthian Empire, they are 2 sestertii and one dupondius, all minted under Trajan.
