Parion in Mysia, Cornelia Supera, Æ22, cf. RPC online 383
« on: October 25, 2016, 05:56:30 pm »
Hello,

this obverse die for Cornelia Supera coins from Parion / Parium is rare or may be an imitation.

Parion in Mysia, Cornelia Supera, 253 AD.,
Æ22 (ø 21-23 mm / 7,15 g), brass, axes coin alignment ↑↓ (ca. 180°),
Obv.: G CORN SVPEHH AVG , her draped bust right, wearing stephane, unusual portrait.
Rev.: CC-IH - PARI , Genius standing left, holding cornucopiae and sacrificing with patera over lighted altar to left.
RPC online volume 9, no. 383 (7 pieces listed, http://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/9/382/ , this dies not pictured) ; same dies as: Numismatik Naumann Auction 32 Lot 300 (7. June 2015, https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2519871 ) , same coin (but cleaned) as: Dr. Busso Peus Nachfolger Auction 416 Lot 267 (28. April 2016, https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3048921 ) ; same obverse die as London Ancient Coins Ltd Auction 39 Lot 140 (18. November 2014, https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2220543 ) .

I wonder about the selection of coins pictured on RPC online volume 9 for Cornelia Supera. Only the better style portraits without spelling errors are listed.

Are these dies not official or modern fakes?

regards

 ???

Not fake, obviously. Error in the legend is commonplace for Parium coinage. Also rotated and inverted letters
