Heart shaped bronze weights
« on: October 16, 2016, 05:19:09 pm »
There are 10 of these heart shaped bronze weights in Hendin and Qedar, and another in the Malter sale of 2011 (shown below).
Does anyone know of any other examples available online or elsewhere?
They seem to be based on a weight unit of a little over 14 gm, effectively a Greek half-ounce (1/32 Mina) on the Phoenician weight scale.

which Hendin reference has the bronze heart shaped weights?

I saw this as well on auction, I do not recall seeing this style before.

Hendin, Ancient Scale Weights etc, #317-320, Qedar 1981 Sale, #98-101, Qedar 1983 Sale, #5101-2. (See Hendin p. 119 for the full Qedar references).

Hi
you will find a lot of similar weights including detailed description as well as photographs in the following book:

"Weights and Weight-Like Objects from CAESAREA MARITIMA by Lionel Holland, Hadera 2009.

Indeed we can, and it seems that these weights come from Caesarea Maritima.
The basic unit seems to be our old friend the 14 gm half-ounce, and there are multiples of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 units.
What is not clear is what period these things date from.

Note that Holland's book can be downloaded (on a chapter by chapter basis) from the academia.edu site (look for Lionel Holland).

Thanks for pointing out Hollands book on line for download, I have a copy of his "Islamic Bronze weights from Caesarea Maritima" which I have appreciated.
