Crispus with reverse legend
« on: October 16, 2016, 11:24:31 am »
Hello, i show you my particular coin. First on the reverse we can read "CAESATUM NOSTRORUM" and the legend is reversed.

Interesting because of the double error, as you point out: rev. legend partly retrograde, and incorrect T for R in CAESATVM.

It's also interesting that the rev. legend is only partly retrograde: CAESATVM NOSTRORVM retrograde, but VOT X and PTR correctly rendered.

The coin looks ancient and official to me.

I found another reverse legend for another mint but with correct CAESARUM NOSTRORUM. https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1241116

Training day at the mint.
... or a "barbarous counterfeit", like the following example (bought by a collegue of mine some time ago, see: http://forum.tpzn.pl/index.php/topic,10019.0/msg,69740.html) with a retrograde obverse legend PN CRISPVS NOBILISS CAES.

There is too much things who clearly show that this coin is official. First the size and weight. Second the style. And third the quality.

One can never get bored with Late Roman coins...something new seems to appear just when you thought you seen everything.
Yep, good fabric...Joe may be right...internship training day at the mint!
Cool find...

A further small error or inconsistency: CAESATVM is retrograde, except for the one letter S, which is correctly rendered, not retrograde!

^^^...while the S in NOSTRORUM is retrograde!

No letter punches in this class, I guess. I can't help imagining a John Cleese schoolmaster style trainer  ;D

Yes, i forgot to mention this point.

The question is: this reverse legend can be an error or a scarce variant? Therefore my coin can enter in this variant, with 2 errors.

An illiterate engraver, perhaps; small kids sometimes get their 'S's backwards.
